STATE COLLEGE - State College High School swimming team head coach Brandon Workman has been charged with DUI. Aaron Workman, 38, was charged Tuesday in connection with a March 13 incident.

According to a complaint, Workman showed up at a school building just before noon March 13 and a witness said he appeared to be intoxicated as he was trying to pick up a district van to take the team to a swim meet.

Police said the witness called police and refused to give Workman the keys after the witness said Workman entered a parking garage going the wrong way.

When police arrived, they located Workman and said he had slurred speech, blood shot eyes and was unsteady on his feet, according to the complaint.

Police said Workman had several breath mints in his mouth and after he spit them out a strong odor of alcohol came from his breath.

Workman was asked to perform sobriety tests and according to police, he failed the tests. Police said Workman was given a preliminary breath test and blew a .225%, which is nearly three times the legal limit.

After being placed in custody, Workman said he did not consume any alcohol that day and had last consumed alcohol the night before.

Police said Workman was given a blood test and the results yielded that his blood alcohol level was .271%.

Tuesday night, the State College School District Superintendent, Bob O' Donnell issued the following statement:

"The State College Police Department has filed charges of DUI against Aaron Workman. Mr. Workman was the head coach of the SCASD swimming and diving team at the time of this incident. However, we want to emphasize that no students were involved in this incident, nor had Mr. Workman been driving a district vehicle. While this is an unfortunate incident, I want to commend our transportation department staff for their diligence and prompt action to ensure the safety of our students.Beyond these comments, we are not able to elaborate further because this is a legal matter. If you have additional questions, please contact the District Attorney’s office."

A spokesman for the district said that Workman has submitted his resignation.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for April 25.
