UNIVERSITY PARK – Students here at Penn State are hoping to spread awareness about a new, on-campus food pantry.
The Lion’s Pantry was created to help Penn State student who are facing food or financial insecurity.
Wednesday, the pantry held an awareness event for students on campus.
"They don't really know what the Lion's Pantry is or what food insecurity is so I think it's really good to raise awareness about this issue that is on campus," said Lion’s Pantry president Vanna Lee.
The organization was founded in 2014 by a group of Penn State students. The pantry is operated by Penn State students for other Penn State students.
With the cost of education and student debt rising, some students just learning about the program feel a sense of comfort that this organization is here to help.
"We have a pantry near our house and it really impacts, so I figure it’s going to be the same here. It's awesome like - we support each other, we're a big family because we are Penn State," said Penn State junior, Stacey Murphey.
The event included food, giveaways, a DJ, and student performances.
With a well-stocked facility, members hope more students use the resources available.
"I think a lot of times at a school this size it's easy to miss this kids who are struggling and having those food insecurities because we're 46,000 strong just here alone. A lot of people who come here don’t think it’s an issue,” said Lion’s Pantry treasurer, Carolyn Stickel. “Opening the pantry gives that kind of outlet to those students to have."
If you need assistance or would like to volunteer, the Lion's Pantry office is open on Tuesdays and Fridays. The organization hopes to extends their hours and collaborate with other for future food drives.
