Authorities in Centre County say Penn State's star linebacker Abdul Carter is facing charges after he was accused of assaulting a tow truck driver last month.

According to the affidavit, State College police were dispatched on March 16th for reports of an assault near an apartment complex along Squirrel Drive.

Police say the caller told 911 that her boyfriend was being assaulted by an unknown male, who was later identified as Carter.

Officers say the victim, who is employed by Half Moon Valley Towing, was reportedly called to the Aspen State College apartment complex to enforce a parking violation.

Police say that when the victim attempted to tow Carter's vehicle, the alarm sounded, prompting Carter to confront the victim.

Authorities say the victim reportedly told Carter that he could avoid to tow, if he paid a fee.

Police say Carter initially attempted to go back into the residence to get the money, but then returned and began asking the victim additional questions.

Authorities say Carter was reportedly concerned about his vehicle being stolen and "questioned the victim's authority."

Police say the victim then explained the situation, and who he worked for, and reportedly told Carter that he needed his name for the paperwork.

Authorities say Carter refused to provide his name, and when the victim began attempting to tow the vehicle, Carter allegedly grabbed the tow hook and tried to prevent the victim from doing his job.

Police say surveillance video then showed Carter grabbing the victim and throwing him to the ground.

Investigators say Carter only stopped assaulting and intimidating the victim once he learned that police had been contacted.

Police say the victim was later transported to the hospital and treated for a fractured rib.

According to online court records, Carter was charged Wednesday with simple assault and harassment.

Carter was previously charged, last September, after campus police say he admitted to using marijuana inside a university dorm room.

6 News has reached out to Penn State University for comment on the latest charges, and received the following response.

The Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Response will review the allegations of misconduct and determine appropriate next steps. The university may take student conduct action in addition to, and separate from, the charges filed by police.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 22nd.
