Penn State Altoona has partnered with SportsArt to bring sustainable gym equipment to the campus.

The equipment helps offset the carbon footprint of the facility by using energy generated by people exercising.

John Carey, director of recreational and athletic facilities, said up to 74 percent of the energy produced by gym users is captured, converted and returned to the grid as utility grade energy that is ready for use.

"What we've done here on campus since we started in January, it kind of gives a comparison of how (much) we have saved, by generating the total watts on the SportsArt (equipment)," Carey said.

Campus officials said this is one example of how students can make sustainability part of their lives.
