A Somerset County physician is facing felony theft charges after a former employee says he failed to deposit funds into her IRA account, according to state police.

According to a criminal complaint, a woman reported in Dec. that she had been working for 64-year-old Philip Basala for many years at the Georgian Place.

During her time there she had been paying into a simple IRA from each paycheck but discovered that the funds, totaling $7,272, hadn’t been deposited into her account, the complaint says.

The complaint says no “Employer Contribution” deposits were being made into her account either.

The woman said the issues were reported to the office financial manager and Basala who said there would be an investigation, the complaint says.

Investigators say a former financial consultant for Basala’s office reported that no payments were made into the woman’s IRA account from Nov. 2018 through Sept. 2019.

A former financial manager told troopers that Basala was aware of the IRA payment struggle that the doctor’s office faced.

Basala has a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 25, court records show.

Basala’s attorney, John Hauser, told 6 News the situation is a “matter of book-keeping errors made by a former employee,” and “Basala is working to fix the situation.”
