DUBOIS – The Dubois community came together today for a special ribbon cutting ceremony for the Rose and Dennis Heindl Memorial Field.

The field is designed for kids with special needs. The stadium includes turf, solid squares for bases and is wheel chair accessible.

The field so special that it brought tears to some people’s eyes.

“This just makes his day, he was so excited. They just have a ball. It’s just the best thing for these kids,” mother Amy Wrubel said.

Emotions flew high for Wrubel after watching the official grand opening for a newly constructed Challenger Field.

“People that don’t have a special needs child, they need to come and watch and appreciate what this means to these kids,” Wrubel said.

Wrubel's 11-year-old son Jayden has been running the bases for four years now. His mother says it's great to have this in the community.

The field features solid surfaces and handicap bathrooms in the dugout. The fields are designed for easy mobility and wheelchair accessibility to ensure safety.

“It’s just the best thing for these kids. Not only him, but all of them, especially kids in wheelchairs.” Wrubel said. “Being able to go around the bases and not having to worry about holes, mud, words can’t describe. It’s just the greatest thing.”

Thanks to the Pittsburgh Pirates and other local officials, the Rose and Dennis Heindl Memorial Field is open for everyone to enjoy a game of baseball.

“It’s not only for those with special needs, but for everyone. And since spring, the field has been busy all day long. Use it,” Pirates minority owner Dennis Heindl said.

The Pittsburgh Pirates also took part in the event. Pirates Charities donated $100,000 to the construction for the new field through the Pirates Charities youth baseball initiatives.

Pirates Charities Chairman Bob Nutting joined Heindl for the grand opening ceremony for the field.

And to finally see their child in action, Jayden’s parents say they appreciate all the hard work that made this field possible.

“Words can’t explain it,” father Brian Wrubel said. “It’s awesome. This is the greatest stadium in Pennsylvania”
