Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — More delays are looming in the plans to convert a former, county owned nursing home in Centre County into an office complex.
Officials say remnants of hazardous materials may still be on site.
The Centre Crest building in Bellefonte is more than 80 years old and, until a few years ago, was a county operated nursing home.
It’s now vacant and the county is looking to consolidate its offices, human services and other departments.
Recently, a $1.4 million contract was approved for a new roof.
In the 1990's, an extensive project removed many hazardous materials, but now a consultant will be hired to survey what may still be remaining inside.
“At this age of the building, taking care, you're doing all the steps needed in terms of asbestos, abatement at the time of the project, is just a crucial step.”
The Centre Crest renovation is expected to include gutting most of the interior, with a projected cost of nearly $30 million.
