6 Sports Stories: Remembering Willie Stargell

JOHNSTOWN -- On this day in 2001, the great Willie Stargell passed away of a stroke at the age of 61. Stargell was a cornerstone in the Pirates' franchise both for his terrific play on the field, and his calm demeanor off of it.

In 1973, Stargell caught up with Bill Wilson in Bradenton to talk about taking on more of a spiritual leader type role due to the tragic loss of Roberto Clemente. At that time, Stargell was in year eleven, and well on his way to earning the lovable nickname of "pops."
