MACON, Ga. (WGXA) — Almost a month after four inmates escaped from a Georgia jail, a third individual has been captured.
On Sunday morning, 37-year-old Johnifer Dernard Barnwell was found inside a home in Augusta. Officials said large amounts of drugs were found in the house, suspected what is to be meth, fentanyl, heroin, marijuana and cocaine. The drugs have yet to be tested in a lab.
This leaves just one inmate, 52-year-old Joey Fournier, who is still out there.
The first captured inmate, 29-year-old Chavis Stokes, was captured on October 26 in a Montezuma residence. More recently, 25-year-old Marc Anderson was arrested in a Buckhead apartment in Atlanta on November 3.
Since the initial escape from Bibb County LEC in Macon, the search for all four inmates has extended into multiple states, with the FBI even offering a $25,000 reward for the capture of all four inmates, prior to the discovery of Stokes.
Officials say the inmates were able to escape through three cut holes in chain link fencing after breaking through the window of a day room inside the facility. Sheriff David Davis told WGXA that aside from escaping together, there is no known connection between the inmates.
The blue Dodge Challenger used to escape from the jail was found back on October 20, which the Bibb County Sheriff's Office located using community tips, finding the vehicle in Macon.
On the day of the original escape, it took nearly five hours for prison security to realize that any inmates had escaped.
Security concerns and deteriorating conditions, along with the high volume of inmates present at the jail, have caused many Bibb County locals to urge Macon leaders to construct a new jail, including Sheriff David Davis and former Macon Mayor C. Jack Ellis.
